# 11 MILE > A private 1907 estate on 4.4 acres on St. Vincent Sound, eleven miles west of Apalachicola, Florida. The whole property is rented to one group at a time, not by the room. ## What it is 11 MILE is the Barefield House, a fourteen-room Greek Revival built in 1907 of heart pine and cypress, with millwork cut by Apalachicola shipbuilders. It has eight fireplaces, original stained glass, a screened porch running the width of the front, and an elevator serving both floors. The grounds run down to a private dock and a shell beach on St. Vincent Sound. It is available for whole-property stays: weddings, family gatherings, milestone birthdays, reunions, fishing and sporting weekends, company retreats, and unstructured weeks with friends. ## History - 1907 — Built in Apalachicola at Avenue K and Seventh Street by lumberman Charles Dobson, for Minnie Barefield, who ran a brothel in the town. She lived there until her death in 1917. The house still carries her name. - c. 1920s–1970s — A convent and a school, run by the Sisters of the Holy Family, the New Orleans religious order founded by Henriette Delille in 1842. - 1974 — The Schoelles family, oystermen, bought the house rather than see it demolished and moved the entire structure eleven miles west to its present site above St. Vincent Sound. That road is where the name comes from. - 2018 — Hurricane Michael. The house survived but took on water and stood empty for several years. - 2022–2024 — Restored. Every wall and room layout kept. Kitchen and bathrooms rebuilt, floors and cypress wainscot refinished by local craftspeople, the house raised to code, air conditioning and an elevator added.
