Experiences

What people do here

Nothing is a fixed package. Everything is arranged around your group and confirmed before it is booked.

Apalachicola Bay built its reputation on them.

01

Oysters on the porch

Apalachicola Bay built its reputation on them.

Kendall Schoelles works oyster beds off the dock below the house and shucks them on the screened porch with a glove and a short knife.

Subject to season. Oyster harvesting in Apalachicola Bay has been restricted in recent years; we will tell you what is available for your dates.

Or a kitchen left entirely alone.

02

A chef for the week

Or a kitchen left entirely alone.

The kitchen was rebuilt during the restoration and works hard. Some groups bring in a chef for the whole stay, some for one dinner, and some cook for themselves and never think about it again. We can arrange any of the three.

Set wherever the weather suits.

03

The long table

Set wherever the weather suits.

A single long table can go on the lawn, along the porch, or down at the shell beach. Most groups ask for the marsh edge in late afternoon.

St. Vincent Sound and the bay beyond it.

04

Days on the water

St. Vincent Sound and the bay beyond it.

Flats fishing, a charter out into the bay, or a boat for the afternoon with nowhere in particular to be. St. Vincent Island sits directly across the sound, and the water in front of the house is usually flat in the morning.

Charters and guides are independent operators. We book them for you and confirm before your stay.

The wooden fishing boat Venezellos laid up on blocks against a brick wall on Avenue E in Apalachicola.

05

Apalachicola

Eleven miles east.

A working waterfront. Oyster houses, a good bookshop, and several hundred nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings, including the corner where this house stood for its first sixty-seven years.

Most of what people actually do here.

06

Unstructured time

Most of what people actually do here.

There is no program. Eight fireplaces, a porch the width of the house, a shell beach, and a lawn that runs down to the water. Plenty of guests book the chef and the boat and then spend four days reading.
